Do I Need to Double Cleanse My Hair?

We’ve all heard of the concept of double cleansing when it comes to our skincare, but what about double cleansing our hair and scalp, is it worth the hype? In a short answer, yes. If you’re skipping this essential step in your hair care routine, you might be missing out on the cleanest, healthiest hair of your life! Here’s what you need to know…

What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing your hair means shampooing it twice during your wash routine. Like double cleansing your face, double shampooing is a great way to ensure hair is really clean. The first cleanse removes any surface-level dirt, oil and product buildup, while the second cleanse allows the shampoo to penetrate deeper into your scalp and strands, nourishing your hair from the roots. This method ensures that hair is thoroughly clean and prepped to receive the benefits of masks or conditioning treatments that follow.

If you’re gentle and use the double shampoo method only when necessary (more on this below!), it’s an easy and effective way to get a clean slate for your hair.

What Are the Benefits of Double Cleansing Your Hair?

1. Removes Product Build-Up

Hair products like styling gels, heat protectants, dry shampoo and oils can weigh hair down over time. The first shampoo will loosen and remove product residue and the second will lift it away and clean your scalp.

2. Improved Scalp Health
A healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy hair. Just like the rest of our skin, sweat, oils and dirt can accumulate on your scalp, potentially clogging hair follicles and leading to irritation or dandruff. Shampooing twice ensures that your scalp gets the deep clean it needs to stay balanced and nourished, promoting healthier hair growth in the long run.

3. Preps the Hair for Scalp Masks or Other Treatments

Just as double-cleansed skin is better prepared to absorb serums and moisturisers, thoroughly cleansed hair can help with the absorption of all the good nutritious ingredients that follow in a mask or conditioning treatment.

4. Enhances Hair Volume

Product buildup and excess oils can weigh your hair down, making it look flat and lifeless. By double cleansing, you're removing the gunk that contributes to this problem. The result is hair that feels lighter, looks fuller and has more natural volume.

How to Double-Cleanse Your Hair

1. Choose The Right Shampoo

Not all shampoos are created equal, so it's essential to choose one that suits your hair type. Sulphate-free shampoos tend to be more nourishing, making them an ideal choice for double cleansing. If you live in a hard water area, try the Frizz Fix™ Shampoo, which features Metal Detox Technology to help achieve brighter hair colour and a softer feel.

2. The First Cleanse

Wet your hair thoroughly and use a small amount of shampoo. Be gentle and use circular motions to massage the formula into your scalp, paying particular attention to the hairline and the back of your head.

3. Rinse and Repeat

After rinsing, apply a slightly larger amount of shampoo for the second cleanse. This time, you’ll notice a richer, more luxurious lather. Work it through your hair from root to tip. The second wash will leave your scalp feeling refreshed and your hair really clean.

4. Follow Up with Conditioner or Treatment

After double-cleansing, it’s important to condition your hair. This step will lock in hydration, leaving your hair soft, manageable and shiny.

How Often Should You Double Cleanse?

This depends on your hair type and lifestyle. If you use a lot of styling products, have oily hair, or live in a city with high pollution, you may benefit from double cleansing every time you wash. For others, once a week may be enough to keep your scalp healthy and hair in great condition. If you wash your hair daily, you can probably skip double cleansing altogether. Also, be careful if you have a sensitive scalp as double cleansing could lead to increased dryness.
